Google.org Commits $15 Mn to The Nudge to Boost AI Adoption Among Indian MSMEs

Google.org, the philanthropic arm of Google, has committed $15 Mn in funding to nonprofit organisation The/Nudge, formerly known as The/Nudge Institute, to support the growth and digital enablement of Indian micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

The initiative aims to develop scalable artificial intelligence (AI) tools to help small businesses improve access to formal credit, discover new markets and navigate compliance requirements.

As part of the initiative, the organisations plan to launch an open call for proposals to identify innovative solutions to challenges faced by MSMEs. The programme will also include a multilingual AI platform designed to train talent in Tier III and Tier IV towns in job-ready skills and connect them with small businesses.

“By partnering with The/Nudge, we are putting open digital tools directly into the hands of small business owners, ensuring that India’s economic backbone is equipped to lead this technology shift,” said Preeti Lobana, VP and country manager at Google India.

The initiative also aims to establish open standards to help Indian MSMEs become more competitive, creditworthy and visible in global markets.

AI Adoption Among Indian MSMEs

The funding comes amid growing efforts to use AI to improve productivity and expand access to digital services among small businesses. AI-powered tools could help MSMEs simplify operational processes, improve access to information and address barriers that limit their ability to scale.

India’s MSME sector continues to face structural challenges in accessing formal finance, expanding market reach and navigating compliance requirements. Limited access to business information and digital tools can further complicate these processes for smaller enterprises.

A World Economic Forum report published in October 2025 estimated that AI adoption could unlock $490-685 Bn in economic value for India’s MSME sector.

Digital Lenders Target MSME Credit Demand

Amid these challenges, digital lenders have increased their focus on MSMEs, which often struggle to secure formal credit despite being the country’s second largest employer.

New-age non-banking financial companies (NBFCs), including Indifi Capital, Techfino, Lendingkart, FlexiLoans and Aye Finance, are leveraging technology to address credit access challenges and provide financing to MSMEs.

The use of technology and AI-based solutions is emerging as one approach to addressing operational and financial barriers faced by small businesses.

Google.org’s Previous Grants in India

Google.org has previously supported initiatives focused on education and information literacy in India.

In 2018, Google.org also provided grants worth $3 Mn to nonprofit organisations in India to support the delivery of quality education through e-learning.

The latest commitment to The/Nudge extends its support to digital enablement, AI adoption and growth opportunities for Indian MSMEs.
