10 Indian Kombucha Brands and the Businesses Behind Them
Kokum, raw mango and rasam-inspired flavours appear in bottles of kombucha made by Indian brands. Behind them are businesses that began in home kitchens, at farmers’ markets or with an interest in fermented food.
Kombucha is made by fermenting sweetened tea with a culture of bacteria and yeast, known as a SCOBY. Fermentation gives it a tangy taste and produces gas, creating fizz. Brands may add fruit, herbs or spices to the brew.
It is often marketed around gut health. Mayo Clinic notes that medical evidence supporting many of its claimed health benefits remains limited.
Kombucha’s Presence in India
India’s kombucha businesses include Mumbai-based Bombucha and SBOOCH, Bengaluru’s Mountain Bee and Brewcha, and New Delhi’s Atmosphere. Their drinks reach consumers through brand websites, cafés, taprooms and grocery platforms.
Indian food references feature in some recipes, including Umami Brew’s Kokum Ginger and Spiced Kairi, and SBOOCH’s Rasam and Gor Keri. Other businesses, including Zoh, also sell cultures for home fermentation.
Who Drinks Kombucha, and Where Does Gen Z Fit In?
Brands market kombucha to people interested in fermented drinks or alternatives to soft drinks. Some also present it as a mixer.
In December 2024 research, Mintel identified taste (47%) and refreshment (42%) as leading influences on Indian Gen Z’s non-alcoholic beverage choices. The study covered the wider drinks category.
Names such as Tribe’s “Bussin Lavender” suggest that some kombucha brands are using internet slang to connect with younger consumers. This is a sign of their marketing approach; the Mintel findings do not measure kombucha consumption specifically.
10 Indian Kombucha Brands
1. Tribe Kombucha
Tribe Kombucha dates its first brew to 2017, with its first manufacturing unit and market launch following in 2022. Founder and CEO Harshvardhan Chauhan operates the brand under Mountaintribe Foods Pvt Ltd. The company links its beginnings to Chauhan’s time in the mountains, which it describes as an influence on his approach to the business. Its drinks use fermented green tea with ingredients such as ginger, lemon, mint, hibiscus and lavender. OG Classic, Zesty Gingerade, Hiiibiscus and Bussin Lavender make up its main range.
2. Bombucha
Bombucha started in 2016, with its early fermented products sold at Mumbai’s Bandra Farmer’s Market. Founder Nitin Gandhi describes small-batch production and traditional fermentation as the basis of the business. Kombucha sits within a wider range that includes kimchi, sauerkraut, kvass and coconut water kefir. Its tea-based drinks pair hibiscus with lime, blueberry with lavender, and mango with turmeric. The company says it brews slowly and avoids artificial flavours and preservatives. Its interest in fermentation also extends to cooking: the brand publishes recipes for kombucha mocktails, kimchi ramen and chicken-and-mushroom congee, connecting its drinks and foods with different dishes.
3. Atmosphere Kombucha
Sisters Rebekah and Ariella Blank launched Atmosphere Kombucha in 2018 after working in food and nutrition. Rebekah had set up FabIndia’s FabCafe, while Ariella worked with Organic India before starting a nutritional therapy practice. The New Delhi-based company traces part of its origin story to the sisters’ upbringing near the Himalayas. Kombucha became part of a wider range that includes kefir, prebiotic sodas and other food and drink products. Its flavours include Exotic Lime, Spicy Ginger, and Blueberry & Lavender. The company says its production team is led by women and places gut health at the centre of its brand positioning.
4. Toyo Kombucha
Toyo Kombucha focuses on ready-to-drink kombucha, with flavours including Cranberry, Pineapple, Ginger Lemon, Lemon Grass and Exotic Peach. Its drinks are grouped into low-sugar and zero-sugar ranges, alongside a Pop Edition collection. The company presents kombucha as an alternative to sugary sodas and says it makes its drinks without preservatives. It also sells mixed selections that combine several flavours in one box. Alongside the drinks, Toyo publishes introductory articles about kombucha. Its approach to the category centres on different versions of fermented tea, using fruit, citrus and herbs across a range sold through its own website.
5. Mountain Bee Kombucha
Self-taught brewer Honey Islam launched Mountain Bee Kombucha in 2018, according to a 2021 Condé Nast Traveller profile. Her interest began in Goa in 2016. The brand’s account describes a later fermentation workshop in San Francisco, where a gifted SCOBY became the starting culture for brewing in Bengaluru. A kitchen experiment developed into a business making bottled and draught kombucha. Mountain Bee says its batches ferment for at least 21 days, using whole-leaf teas, fruit and botanicals. Its range includes Pineapple-Chilli and Bangalore Blue Grape. The business also operates a taproom and runs tasting sessions alongside its bottled sales.
6. Umami Brew
A bakery dessert and raw mangoes from a farm are among the influences behind Umami Brew’s recipes. According to the company, an orange chocolate dessert inspired Cacao Orange, while the mangoes led to Spiced Kairi. It says its produce comes from Pune’s fruit and vegetable market and is washed, peeled and juiced at the brewery. Other recipes include Kokum Ginger, Apple Cinnamon and Pineapple Spice, alongside a classic brew. The company describes experimentation with food memories as part of its development process. Its drinks are sold directly online and through channels it lists as including Amazon, BigBasket, Blinkit and Swiggy Instamart.
7. Brewcha
Mathew Paulson’s father liked a carbonated drink with his meals. After moving to India, Paulson began brewing kombucha for him at home, according to Brewcha’s account of its beginnings. He then shared the drinks with friends and family, whose requests for more led him to set up a brewery. The Bengaluru business makes kombucha in small batches using green tea, fruit and plant-based botanicals. It says fermentation takes 14 to 20 days. Its range includes Classic Cola, Ginger, Blood Orange, Passion Fruit and Mango. Brewcha ships across India and supplies bulk orders for offices, cafés and events.
8. Zoh Probiotics
Zoh Probiotics combines bottled fermented drinks with cultures for home brewing. Its website lists team members with backgrounds in nutrition, microbiology and food safety. Kombucha flavours include Lavender and Kashmiri Kahwa, while ginger lemon water kefir is another part of the drinks range. The company describes its kombucha as raw, unfiltered and unpasteurised. It also sells SCOBY starters and brewing kits, alongside cultures for yoghurt, kefir, sourdough, tempeh and koji. Recipes and troubleshooting guides accompany the products. Kombucha therefore appears in two parts of its work: as a finished beverage and as a ferment people can prepare at home.
9. SBOOCH
Rasam, Gor Keri and Koshimbir are names associated with Indian kitchens. At Mumbai-based SBOOCH, they also appear as kombucha flavours. The brand was created by Nirraj and Kajall Manek, according to its team page, and uses regional ingredients and food references across its range. Other recipes include Tulsi & Lemon, Naga Pepper, and Rice & Pandan. The company markets its drinks as plant-based and sells directly through its website. It also lists Amazon, Blinkit and Swiggy Instamart as sales channels. Its flavour choices are an example of how Indian food references are being used to introduce fermented tea to consumers.
10. HappyBooch
Journalist-turned-entrepreneur Shailaja Sharma started HappyBooch in 2016. The Mumbai-based brand was described in a 2021 Condé Nast Traveller profile as a small-batch kombucha business using loose-leaf teas, fruit, herbs and botanicals. Rose Lavender, Mango Bliss and Basil Lime were among the flavours reported then and remain in its current catalogue. The range also includes Strawberry Dreams, Blueberry Kiss, Watermelon and Ginger Love. HappyBooch maintains an Instamojo storefront for its bottled drinks, with both individual-flavour and mixed selections listed. Its listed range focuses on bottled kombucha, with fruit-led blends and herbal or floral recipes offered side by side.
