Falguni Nayar
Falguni Nayar (born 19 February 1963) is an Indian billionaire entrepreneur and the founder and CEO of Nykaa (FSN E-Commerce Ventures Ltd), one of India's largest beauty and lifestyle retail platforms. At the age of 50, she left a highly successful two-decade career in investment banking to build Nykaa from scratch, investing $2 million of her own money. When Nykaa went public in November 2021 at a valuation of $13 billion, she became India's wealthiest self-made woman and one of only two self-made female Indian billionaires alongside Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw.
Early Life and Education
Falguni Nayar was born on 19 February 1963 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, into a Gujarati family with a strong business background. Her father ran a small bearings company, assisted by her mother, giving Falguni an early exposure to the world of commerce and entrepreneurship. She attended The New Era School in Mumbai for her early education.
She completed her Bachelor of Commerce from Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics in 1983. She then pursued an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM-A) in 1985, one of India's most prestigious management institutions. It was during her time at IIM-A that she met Sanjay Nayar, who would later become her husband.
Career in Investment Banking
After completing her MBA, Falguni began her career in May 1985 as a manager at A.F. Ferguson & Co., a prominent management consultancy, where she worked for nearly nine years. In 1993, she joined the Kotak Mahindra Group, where she would spend the next 18 years building a distinguished career in investment banking.
At Kotak Mahindra, she led the mergers and acquisitions team and played a pivotal role in opening institutional equities offices in London and New York. She returned to India in 2001 and by 2005 was appointed Managing Director of Kotak Mahindra Capital, also serving as Director of Kotak Securities. During her tenure she served on the boards of several major companies including Tata Motors, Aviva Life Insurance, ACC Limited, and Dabur India Limited. In 2012, at the height of her banking career, she made the bold decision to leave and pursue entrepreneurship.
Founding Nykaa
In April 2012, Falguni Nayar founded Nykaa — a name derived from the Sanskrit word "Nayika," meaning a woman in the spotlight or heroine. She launched the company from her father's small office, hiring just three people initially, and invested $2 million of her own savings. The company began as an online multi-brand beauty retailer, focusing on authentic products in a market plagued by counterfeits.
The early years were challenging. When the website received around 100 orders, it would crash, bringing the entire system down. But demand steadily grew from 2013 onward. Nykaa expanded from a digital-first platform to an omnichannel retailer with offline stores in over 68 cities across India, stocking more than 2,400 brands. It later launched its own private label beauty products and expanded into fashion through Nykaa Fashion.
Nykaa achieved unicorn status in 2020, became India's first woman-led unicorn, and listed on Indian stock exchanges on 10 November 2021 at a valuation of $13 billion. The IPO made Falguni Nayar the wealthiest self-made woman in India. Her daughter Adwaita Nayar serves as CEO of Nykaa Fashion and her son Anchit Nayar heads the retail and e-commerce divisions, making Nykaa a family-driven business at the leadership level.
D2C and Brand Strategy
Nykaa pioneered the curated beauty retail model in India, combining a wide assortment of authentic products with content-led marketing including tutorials, reviews, and influencer collaborations. Its D2C private label brands span skincare, haircare, cosmetics, and wellness. The company's success proved that a digital-first, content-commerce model could disrupt traditional FMCG distribution in India's vast beauty market.
Awards and Recognition
Falguni Nayar has received widespread recognition for her entrepreneurial achievements, including Woman Ahead Award at ET Startup Awards (2017), Businesswoman of the Year at Economic Times Awards for Corporate Excellence (2019), EY Entrepreneur of the Year (2019 & 2021), Asia's Power Businesswomen by Forbes Asia (2019), Business Person of the Year by Vogue India (2019), DNA Women Achievers Award in FMCG (2023), and inclusion in Forbes India's Rich List (2022, rank 44).
Personal Life
Falguni Nayar married Sanjay Nayar in 1987, whom she met at IIM Ahmedabad. Sanjay Nayar is the CEO of Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (KKR) India and one of India's most prominent private equity investors. The couple have twins — Adwaita Nayar (CEO, Nykaa Fashion) and Anchit Nayar (CEO, Beauty E-Commerce at Nykaa), both of whom studied at top international universities. Falguni is an avid reader with a particular interest in books on business leadership and personal development, and enjoys traveling and exploring different cultures.
