Ghazal Alagh
Ghazal Alagh (born 2 September 1988) is an Indian entrepreneur, investor, and artist best known as the co-founder and Chief Innovation Officer of Mamaearth, India's leading toxin-free personal care brand. She co-founded Honasa Consumer Limited alongside her husband Varun Alagh in 2016, building one of India's fastest-growing direct-to-consumer (D2C) beauty companies. She also appeared as an investor on the first season of Shark Tank India in 2021, gaining nationwide recognition as a businesswoman and startup mentor.
Early Life and Education
Ghazal Alagh was born on 2 September 1988 in Chandigarh, India, into a middle-class family. Her father, Kailash Sahni, owned a car accessories showroom, while her mother, Sunita Sahni, is a homemaker. She has a sister, Sahiba Chauhan, and a brother, Chirag Sahni. Her upbringing instilled in her strong values of resilience, creativity, and hard work.
She completed her schooling in Chandigarh and later graduated with a Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) from Panjab University in 2010. In 2013, she moved to New York to pursue intensive courses in Modern Art, Design, and Applied Arts at the School of Visual Arts and the New York Academy of Art — a period that deepened her creative instincts and design sensibility.
Early Career
Ghazal began her professional career in 2008 as a corporate trainer at NIIT Chandigarh, specializing in SQL, J2ME, and Oracle. She worked there for approximately two and a half years, developing skills in structured problem-solving and team leadership. She also co-founded DietXpert, an online customized diet planning platform, in 2012 — her first entrepreneurial venture before Mamaearth.
Mamaearth & Honasa Consumer
The inspiration for Mamaearth came from a deeply personal experience. When Ghazal's first son, Agastya, was diagnosed with eczema as an infant, she and Varun struggled to find safe, toxin-free baby care products in the Indian market. Most available products were laden with harmful chemicals, leaving them no choice but to import products from abroad. This gap in the market led them to create their own solution.
In 2016, Ghazal and Varun Alagh co-founded Honasa Consumer Private Limited and launched Mamaearth — Asia's first MADE SAFE-certified personal care brand. The company began with just seven baby care products and an initial investment of ₹25 lakhs. Adopting a digital-first, D2C strategy with strong influencer marketing, Mamaearth rapidly expanded into skincare, haircare, and wellness for adults.
Under Ghazal's leadership as Chief Innovation Officer, Honasa grew into a multi-brand house, acquiring BBlunt and Dr. Sheth's and launching The Derma Co., Aqualogica, and Ayuga. The company achieved unicorn status in 2022 and went public through its IPO on Indian stock exchanges in 2023, becoming one of India's prominent D2C-born listed companies.
Shark Tank India
Ghazal Alagh appeared as a Shark (investor) on Season 1 of Shark Tank India in 2021, where she evaluated and invested in early-stage startups. Her consumer insight, product-first thinking, and empathetic approach made her a popular judge on the show. She invested in several startups across categories including food and beverage, personal care, and technology, using her D2C expertise to mentor founders on brand-building and growth strategies.
Art and Creative Pursuits
Alongside entrepreneurship, Ghazal Alagh is a recognized visual artist. Her training at the New York Academy of Art and School of Visual Arts gave her a strong foundation in figurative and modern art. She has been recognized as one of India's top ten female artists and continues to integrate her artistic sensibility into Mamaearth's brand design and product aesthetics.
Awards and Recognition
Ghazal Alagh has received numerous awards recognizing her contributions to entrepreneurship and innovation, including Mamaearth's Best Brand of the Year (2018–19), Economic Times 40 Under 40 (2019), Super Startup Asia Award (2019), Nielsen Award (2020), Women Entrepreneur of the Year by Entrepreneur India (2021), and Business World 40 Under 40.
Personal Life
Ghazal married Varun Alagh on 28 January 2011. Together they are the entrepreneurial force behind Mamaearth, often referred to as the "mompreneur couple" of Indian D2C. The couple has two sons — Agastya Alagh (born 2014) and Ayaan Alagh (born 2022). The family lives in Gurgaon, Haryana, in a multigenerational home alongside her parents and grandmother. She is an early riser, practices yoga daily, and enjoys reading.
