Pronto Founder Anjali Sardana’s Provision Labs Acquires Basilisk Industries

Provision Labs, the San Francisco-based physical AI startup founded by Pronto founder Anjali Sardana, has acquired Mumbai-based hardware startup Basilisk Industries for an undisclosed amount.

Sardana announced the acquisition in a LinkedIn post, stating that Basilisk Industries founder Shourya Watwani will lead Provision’s hardware development and work on its in-house post-processing models.

Founded in 2023 by Watwani, Basilisk Industries focuses on perception technologies that help machines interpret their surroundings.

According to an Inc42 report on the acquisition, Watwani and his team have already developed a 3D hand-tracking model, redesigned Provision’s perception hardware and built the first version of a lightweight tactile glove to capture touch-related data.

Provision Labs is also expanding its engineering and research teams across San Francisco, Toronto and Bengaluru.

Provision Labs Focuses on Building Physical AI Infrastructure

Sardana recently launched Provision Labs in San Francisco to collect data for training and testing physical artificial intelligence systems.

As reported by The Economic Times in its coverage of Provision Labs’ launch, the startup focuses on collecting data to support physical AI systems.

Physical AI refers to artificial intelligence designed to perform real-world tasks through robots and other machines.

Provision Labs plans to source training data from professionals across different sectors globally to help developers deploy their physical AI models.

Sardana currently serves as CEO of both Provision Labs and Pronto.

A separate Moneycontrol report on Provision Labs also covered the launch of Sardana’s San Francisco-based physical AI venture.

Pronto’s Household Recording Pilot Raised Privacy Concerns

Provision Labs was launched following scrutiny of a household recording pilot conducted by Pronto, Sardana’s home services startup.

The pilot involved service professionals wearing cameras while performing household tasks, including cleaning, washing dishes and folding laundry.

The footage was intended to generate training data for physical AI and robotics systems.

However, recording activities inside customers’ homes raised questions about privacy, consent and data storage.

Pronto maintained that customers were required to opt in to the programme while booking services.

The company also stated that the pilot covered less than 0.01% of its users.

According to Pronto, the initiative complied with India’s Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, and the recorded footage would not be shared with third-party AI laboratories.

Snabbit and Urban Company Respond to Recording Concerns

The discussion surrounding Pronto’s recording pilot also brought attention to data collection practices among other home services companies.

Snabbit said it had conducted a one-time simulation test at a training centre in collaboration with data collection startup Human Archive.

Meanwhile, Urban Company stated that it had never recorded activities inside customers’ homes and had no plans to introduce such recordings.

Provision Labs is expanding its physical AI operations through the acquisition of Basilisk Industries while developing technologies for collecting and processing real-world training data.
