Uber To Set Up Data Centre In India In Partnership With Adani Group

Ride-hailing major Uber is establishing its first data centre in India in collaboration with Adani Group, marking a significant expansion of the company’s technology and innovation operations in the country.

Announcing the development on X, Dara Khosrowshahi said India is rapidly emerging as a key innovation hub for Uber, adding that the company is partnering with Adani Group to test and deploy its technologies through the upcoming data centre.

Khosrowshahi stated that the facility is expected to go live later this year and will play a major role in supporting Uber’s global technology initiatives from India.

“This investment will help us build at scale, from India, for the world,” he said.

The announcement comes shortly after Khosrowshahi met Nirmala Sitharaman to discuss Uber’s long-term plans for the Indian market. Following the meeting, the Uber chief said the company sees itself as a long-term contributor to India’s ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ vision and revealed that the number of earners on Uber’s platform in India has grown fourfold since his last meeting with the finance minister in 2022.

During his India visit, Khosrowshahi also met Amitabh Kant.

The move comes amid rising investments by global technology firms in India’s AI and data centre ecosystem. OpenAI is reportedly planning a 1 GW data centre in partnership with Tata Consultancy Services, while Reliance Industries is building large-scale data centre projects in Jamnagar and Visakhapatnam. Meanwhile, Amazon has committed $12.7 billion towards expanding its cloud infrastructure in India by 2030.

Earlier this week, Ashwini Vaishnaw said Google is seriously exploring the possibility of manufacturing AI servers in India, as the government encourages global technology firms to pursue local production.

The latest development also strengthens Adani Group’s growing ambitions in the AI and data centre sector. At the India AI Impact Summit earlier this year, Gautam Adani announced plans to invest $100 billion in India’s sovereign AI infrastructure by 2035 through renewable energy-powered data centres.

Last year, AdaniConneX partnered with Google and Bharti Airtel to build a large AI-focused data centre campus in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The project is expected to attract investments worth nearly $15 billion between 2026 and 2030 and will include AI-centric data centres, subsea cable connectivity, clean energy infrastructure, and advanced power systems to strengthen India’s AI and compute ecosystem.

Reports last month also suggested that the Adani Group is in discussions with Meta, Google, and Flipkart for potential collaborations in its expanding data centre business as it scouts new locations across India.

India’s AI sector is projected to reach a market size of $126 billion by 2030 and contribute nearly $1.7 trillion to the country’s GDP by 2035, making it one of the fastest-growing AI ecosystems globally.
